Tuscany

Scouting notes from the studio — where we'd photograph a wedding here, and how we'd plan the light. We're currently booking Tuscany dates.

Tuscany is where the studio's whole aesthetic goes home. The Renaissance painters we borrow light from painted this light — low, amber, thick as varnish across stone farmhouses and cypress lanes. Photographing a wedding here is less about finding beauty than about not getting in its way.

Where we'd shoot

Val d'Orcia
The postcard Tuscany south of Siena — cypress-lined roads near San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza. Portraits on those lanes in the last hour of sun are the reason couples fly here. Book a villa or agriturismo nearby and the whole landscape becomes the venue.
Historic villas & borghi
Restored estates in the hills — think walled gardens, lemon trees in terracotta, and dinner down one long table. The classic play: ceremony in the garden, portraits in the olive rows, dancing in the courtyard under string lights.
Chianti wine country
Between Florence and Siena — vineyard terraces, stone cellars, and hilltop chapels. September brings harvest energy; the vines are heaviest and greenest right when the light is best.
Abbey ruins
For couples who want drama: roofless Gothic abbeys where the ceiling is sky. Late afternoon, the stone goes gold and the grass floor catches long shadows — the most painterly ceremony backdrop in Italy.

The light, honestly

Tuscan summer light is glorious and brutal in equal measure — harsh and vertical from noon until five, then forty-five minutes of the best golden hour in Europe. We'd build the timeline backwards from that window: ceremony late, portraits at the amber hour, and a first look in soft morning shade if you want more couple time. May, June, and late September are the sweet spots; September adds harvest and gentler heat.

Planning notes

Getting married in Italy involves a little paperwork or a symbolic ceremony after a legal one at home — most couples choose the latter and lose nothing. Travel for Tuscany is quoted as one flat line, and we plan to arrive two days early to scout your specific venue at your specific ceremony hour. That habit is where half our best frames come from.
