Lisbon

Scouting notes from the studio — where we'd photograph a wedding here, and how we'd plan the light. We're currently booking Lisbon dates.

Lisbon has the best city light in Europe and knows it — Atlantic-washed, gold on the hills by late afternoon, bouncing off white limestone and painted tile until the whole city works like a reflector. It's also two weddings in one trip: the city itself, and Sintra's misty palace gardens thirty minutes away.

Where we'd shoot

Alfama & the miradouros
The old quarter's tangled lanes — azulejo facades, laundry lines, trams sliding past — end in viewpoints that hold the whole city at golden hour. Portraits move on foot here, unhurried, like a film about two people who got married that morning.
Sintra's palaces
Romantic-era palaces and estate gardens in the hills — fern ravines, painted pavilions, initiation wells, fog that arrives like a special effect. For couples torn between city and fairytale, Sintra is the second act.
Palácio courtyards & quintas
Lisbon's historic quintas and palace hotels host full weddings under orange trees and tiled arcades — courtyard ceremonies, candlelit stone dinners, fado if you're wise.
The river at blue hour
Down at the Tagus, the light lingers after sunset and the bridge glows like its San Francisco cousin. A ten-minute detour for the closing frames of the night.

The light, honestly

Lisbon's hills mean the golden hour moves around the city — east-facing miradouros for morning, west-facing for evening — and the Atlantic keeps the air clear enough that even midday is workable in the shaded lanes. September and October are the studio's picks: warm sea light, thinner crowds, and Sintra's mists at their most cinematic. Spring jacarandas in late May are Lisbon's quiet rival to Mexico City's.

Planning notes

The classic shape: city portraits one day, Sintra the next morning before the tour buses — a two-day rhythm that suits destination weddings with a welcome dinner. Trams, tiles, and steep cobbles reward comfortable shoes and a loose schedule. Travel quoted flat; we'd scout your miradouro at your exact ceremony hour, because in Lisbon the hour is everything.
