French Alps

Scouting notes from the studio — where we'd photograph a wedding here, and how we'd plan the light. We're currently booking French Alps dates.

The Alps are two wedding seasons wearing one range: winter's candlelit chalets and blue-hour snow, and summer's wildflower meadows above teal lakes. Either way the mountains do something no flat horizon can — they give every frame a third dimension and the couple something ancient to stand against.

Where we'd shoot

Chalet winters
Megève and Chamonix stage the storybook version — fur wraps, fondue courses, a torchlit walk to dinner. Photography lives in the contrast: white world outside, amber wood and candlelight within. Snowfall during portraits is a gift, not a problem.
Blue hour on snow
The Alps' signature frame: after sunset, snow turns luminous blue while chalet windows burn gold. Fifteen minutes, worth building the entire evening around — the winter answer to golden hour, and rarer.
Summer alpages
June to September flips the range green — wildflower meadows reached by lift or footpath, cowbells for a soundtrack, and glacier peaks behind the vows. Mountain refuges host dinners closer to the sky than any rooftop.
Lake Annecy
Turquoise water, a canal-laced old town, and mountains on every side — the Alps' answer to the Italian lakes, with wooden jetties made for first looks and evening boats for two.

The light, honestly

Altitude sharpens everything — thinner air, cleaner shadows, colors that ring. In winter the sun leaves valley floors early (south-facing venues buy you hours), and snow acts as a giant fill light that flatters faces even at midday. Summer gives long alpine evenings, but afternoon cloud builds fast around peaks — mornings are the dependable window up high. Mid-June for flowers; late January for deep-snow certainty.

Planning notes

Mountain logistics are their own craft: lifts close, roads chain up, golden hour happens at altitude while dinner waits below. We'd build a weatherproof timeline with the venue — indoor beauty as plan A-and-a-half, not a consolation. Travel quoted flat, Geneva is the gateway, and yes: we own boots for this and will happily hike for the frame.
