Iceland

Scouting notes from the studio — where we'd photograph a wedding here, and how we'd plan the light. We're currently booking Iceland dates.

Iceland is the elopement destination other elopement destinations dream about — a country-sized film set of black sand, moss-green lava fields, and waterfalls that arrive every twenty minutes of driving. The weather is a co-photographer with strong opinions, and honestly, its ideas are usually better than ours.

Where we'd shoot

Black-sand beaches
The south coast's basalt shores — charcoal sand, sea stacks, white surf — are monochrome photography that composes itself. A white gown against black sand under a silver sky needs no direction at all, just wind management (bring pins; trust the veil).
Waterfalls
From falls you can walk behind to curtains dropping off the highlands, each is its own ceremony backdrop. Mist is constant and glorious — we'd bring towels for lenses and zero anxiety about the dress hem.
Glacier lagoons
Icebergs drifting to sea past a couple in wedding clothes: the frame that looks composited and isn't. The ice glows blue on overcast days — Iceland's version of good weather.
Lava fields & Reykjavik
Moss-covered lava plains make an otherworldly first-look stage minutes from the capital, and Reykjavik itself — corrugated houses, harbor light — grounds the story with warmth and coffee.

The light, honestly

Iceland runs on extremes: June's midnight sun means golden hour lasts from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. (we'd schedule the ceremony absurdly late, and you'll thank us), while late September through March trades daylight for aurora odds. Overcast — the default — is a giant softbox that makes every portrait gentle. The only rule is flexibility: the forecast is a suggestion, and the best plan holds two locations per hour of coverage.

Planning notes

This is 4x4-and-thermals territory: locations spread along the ring road, weather changes by the kilometre, and the couples who love their galleries most are the ones who hiked ten minutes in boots with the dress in a backpack. Elopement collections suit Iceland better than big-wedding coverage — small, mobile, all-day. Travel quoted flat; we'd build a two-day window into the plan so the weather can have its mood and we still get ours.

Dreaming of Iceland? So are we.
